ABOUT SOUTH PLEASANT COMPANY

Founded in 2001, South Pleasant Company makes work that blurs the boundaries of theater and dance. In the past four years, the company has made performances produced as part of the New York International Fringe Festival and other showcases, and presented at Thorne's Market in Northampton, Mass., at Amherst College, Mass., and at P.S. 122, HERE Arts Center, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and the 14th Street Y Theater in New York City.

South Pleasant develops work that explores interpersonal relationships through the combination of text and movement, portrays the events of everyday life through non-pedestrian gestures, and creates movement vocabularies that are deeply rooted in the stories they tell. South Pleasant Company's pieces often explore the complex relationships within families and focus on the themes of independence, storytelling, childhood, memory, and nostalgia. The company's productions are written and directed by Cristina Septien but are heavily dependent on collaboration with performers and artists in rehearsal.

The mission of the South Pleasant Company is to create movement-theater performance works that tell stories replete with non-pedestrian gesture; to bring the body back to the theater; to experiment with text and movement and continue to develop a personal movement vocabulary while staying accessible; to appeal to a wide range of artists and performance makers, both in the theater and dance fields; to continue to create work that is intellectually stimulating to its performers but stays true to strong emotions without shunning sentimentality.
